When He Was Blind
2009. Appealing to both the visual and tactile senses, this work is meant for both sighted and blind readers. This box, with raised dots on the top that spell out the title, is approximately the size of a normal Braille book. Open it to find four compartments. One compartment holds a stack of Braille alphabet letters transformed into bead and muslin "touchcards." Two other small compartments hold words of a hidden story the reader can discover for herself/himself. The largest compartment features two books: a hardcover book that features letterpress printed haikus with no ink (printed blind) and brightly painted segments; and an appendix that is hand-stenciled on a found and altered Braille magazine. The life of Louis Braille and his invention of a written language for the Blind are only part of what the reader will discover in this multi-layered book.

For Alisa Golden making books is the natural bridge between her writing and art. Through layered imagery and poetic language she invites the reader to experience multiple meanings, all bound in structures that echo the contents. After years of working precisely with printmaking techniques, primarily letterpress, and creating editioned works, she is currently exploring the spontaneity of ink painting in her one-of-a-kind books. In our 2008 exhibition, she has taken her works even further, incorporating felted works and multiple objects. In addition to her studio practice, she teaches at California College of the Arts, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the San Francisco Center for the Book. She is the author of four instructional books: Creating Handmade Books, Unique Handmade Books, Expressive Handmade Books (Sterling Publishing.) and Painted Paper .
